Garrett Augustus Morgan, born in 1877 and died in 1963 stumble across a hair straightening cream when he was working in his clothing shop. He created a original lubricating liquid for his needles to prevent static on the garments. It is widely thought that one day he wiped the liquid off his hands on a piece of woolly cloth when he went to dinner, only to find when he return that the fibres on his cloth had straighten.

He later experimented on his neighbour’s dog (Airedale- has curly fur) to see if the dog’s fur would have the same effect and it worked. The dog’s fur was so smooth that apparently the owner did not recognise his own pet and shooed him away!

Satisfied with his experiment and trying it on his own hair, Morgan later went on to selling his own product called G.A Morgan’s Hair Refiner. From this evolved a wide line of products (including skin bleaching creams, hot combs, hair pomades and more) and was later claimed to be the only complete line hair preparations in the world!

Garrett Morgan later created the first gas mask and patented a traffic light system. To find out more information about him and his other creations click here
